Classroom Observation
In its division, each level is divided into several parts:
- Kindergarten: Education for early childhood.
- Elementary
school: provides basic education for students the age of 6-12 years old.
- Secondary
school: lower secondary education (Grade 7-10) and upper secondary education
(Grade 11-12).
The period given for class observation is approximately two weeks. The purpose of this observation is to get to know the characteristics of students and understand the teachers’ steps in teaching.
In
its teaching system, UNP LabSchool uses the MATATAG curriculum, which is the
local Philippine curriculum. The term MATATAG, which means "tough" or
"strong" in Filipino, reflects the purpose of the curriculum to
provide students with a strong educational foundation. This curriculum is
a new breakthrough to replace the old curriculum, namely K-12 by reducing the
burden of content that is too dense, so that teachers and students can focus on
mastering basic skills. There are five core lessons in this curriculum, namely
language, reading and literacy, Makabansa (Patriotic), Mathematics, and GMRC
(Good Manners and Right Conduct). In addition, there are four main pillars in
this curriculum, including, Makabansa (Patriotic), Matao (People-centered),
Mahas (Competent), and Matatag (Resilient). The curriculum aims to improve
literacy and numeracy skills from an early age, strengthen character education,
and provide a 21st-century approach to learning.
However,
for grade 9 they still used the former curriculum which is K-12. The implementation
of MATATAG curriculum conducted in several stages.
Teaching
Methods
The learning process in the laboratory school conducted by using student-centered approach. This approach allows students to more active and creative in learning rather than being a listener. Teacher here as a facilitator which facilitate and supervise students during the class, and guides them in forming their own understanding. The advantage of student-centered also it promotes independent thinking, collaboration, learning autonomy, and responsibility.
Classroom
Equipment
Furthermore,
each classroom here provided with whiteboard, marker, television, fan, and
other equipment that can be borrowed at the faculty. Apart from that, there is
no internet connection in the classroom since some teacher prohibited students
to use their phone during class. This might be their strategy to reduce the
attachment of cellular phone during classroom teaching, so students can focus
better to the lecture.
